This 1 year, 120 hour postgraduate course has provided Dr. Katie with the advanced skills and techniques to better care for children and pregnant women in her practice; BS degree in Biology from Concordia, Moorhead in 2001.

Why Dr. Katie became a chiropractor:

Dr. Katie was a pre-med student, but then she met a 70 year old medical doctor on a plane to Ireland during the summer going into her Junior year of college.  The MD talked to her throughout the flight about why NOT to become a medical doctor.  She had told her that through the years medicine had evolved so much that the only thing MD’s really could do for people is prescribe medicine or do surgery; they really didn’t have the tools (or weren’t allowed to use the tools) to help a person regain their health.  That conversation was life changing and Dr. Katie decided to look at other options in the health care field. A few weeks after she returned from her trip, Dr. Katie was introduced to Chiropractic.  She began having low back pain after lifting some clients at her job as a nursing assistant.  The low back pain she was having drastically decreased with adjustments, but at the time she wasn’t seeing a wellness chiropractor, instead she was seeing a pain based chiropractor, so she was never taught that adjustments over time can drastically change a persons health and life!

Dr. Katie grew up with the medical model instilled in her like most Americans.  When she had an ache or a pain she took a Tylenol or Advil, when she was diagnosed with depression/anxiety she took a medication, when she had trouble losing weight she took weight loss medications, when she was diagnosed with ADD/ADHD she took a medication, when she was diagnosed with “Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome” she took a medication….. By the end of college she was taking Adderol (ADD med), Ambien (sleeping med), and Wellbutrin (anxiety/depression med) and quite a bit of Advil.  She was 22 years old and already regularly taking 3 prescription medications.

When she arrived at chiropractic school she started getting adjusted on a regular basis.  After a few months she started noticing that she was sleeping better, she had much more energy and wasn’t taking naps all the time, she didn’t get agitated as easily and she was much more calm, her concentration started improving and was not getting distracted as easily anymore and overall she noticed her quality of life improving.  Yes her aches and pains went away after 1-2 months of chiropractic care but slowly over a year most of her other symptoms decreased too.  Over that year she was functioning so well that she was no longer taking Ambien, Advil, or Wellbutrin and she was down to half of her ADD medication.  At the 1.5 year mark of getting adjusted on a regular basis she was off of all of her medications and she was finally on the right track towards optimal health.  She was no longer chasing symptoms instead the root cause of her symptoms was being addressed!

Chiropractic helped her realize that health comes from within and we have the power and the ability to heal ourselves as long as our nervous system is functioning optimally!  Chiropractic adjustments help to remove the nerve interference (subluxation) which can be decreasing one’s health.

What are the top 6 things Dr. Katie does on her journey towards wellness:

  1. She continues to be adjusted each week to keep functioning optimally.
  2. Exercises 4-6 times a week (5 cardio sessions and 2 weight training sessions).  She challenges herself by training for and competing in triathlons.
  3. Takes Juice Plus (whole food supplement), Fish Oil, Vitamin D, Magnesium, and Probiotics (good bacteria) daily.
  4. Does 1-2 whole body detox’s a year to help reboot her body by improving the function of her colon and liver and stimulating her metabolism!
  5. Before her evening meal she says a few things she’s grateful for and she consciously tries to focus on the positive instead of dwelling on the negative!
  6. Tries to avoid fast food (except she occasionally has Chipotle ) and processed foods.
Dr. Katie looks forward to helping others regain their life and strive towards optimal wellness!
Jenny Mackori, Chiropractic Assistant

Experience:

Six years in the administrative field

Education:

Attended Winona State University

Jenny first sought chiropractic care for relief from severe lower back pain. It wasn’t until meeting Dr. Katie Cowles that she began to learn about the wonders of routine chiropractic care. Dr. Katie educated Jenny on how strong her body was and that she did not need to live a life with severe back pain.

In the past year and a half since she started working with Dr. Katie, she has experienced amazing changes in her health. Jenny has learned how to better take care of her body’s nutritional and physical needs along with routine chiropractic care.

She is excited to expand her knowledge of chiropractic care and for the chance to educate others on how chiropractic can change their life as it did hers.

Jenny and her husband, Casey reside in Burnsville with their children, Sean who is 8 years old, Amani 16 months old, and baby girl due in March 2010. Amani has been very lucky to have Dr. Katie in her life since birth. Amani’s first adjustment happened only 27 hours after she was born. Jenny feels that Amani’s overall health has been superior due to routine chiropractic care.

When Jenny does get a minute to relax, she loves to hang out with her family and once in awhile go to a movie with friends.
